Metal Tech Industries was contacted by a company that specializes in heavy duty diesel engines for agricultural applications. An employee in their emissions testing program was in search of a gasket material that would pass their test cycle. The lab had been using a competitor’s basic graphite tang core material. Lab personnel found that the graphite was oxidizing away and the gaskets were failing throughout the test cycle.
Metal Tech Industries was contacted by a large heavy duty diesel engine equipment company with an inquiry about assisting with a cost savings initiative. The customer was using a high temperature layered vermiculite composition laminate. They weren’t having any performance issues, but the cost was very high.
This customer has been using HT400 successfully for years in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) gaskets. They had a new application, and they tried the HT400 because it has always worked for them, but they started experiencing heat related issues.
Metal Tech Industries was contacted about a competitor’s gasket materials that were not surviving engine dyno testing. This testing was being performed by a company that manufacturers heavy duty diesel engine applications in the agricultural market.
Metal Tech Industries was contacted by a testing facility that performs high temperature exhaust component testing. Their high temperature test rigs represent extreme environments to provide higher temperatures and test cycles to artificially age the components. Initially, the customer was using a traditional graphite gasket for these exhaust flanges. The graphite was showing oxidation and deterioration due to the extreme conditions.
Metal Tech Industries was contacted by an industrial heating equipment manufacturer. Their boiler units are classified as professional-grade equipment, and accordingly require world-class components for long service life. They were having durability issues with an unknown version of graphite, and were hopeful that our metal reinforced gasket materials would be able to survive in their application.
A. It is helpful if some of the basic performance requirements are known, such as: temperature, media being sealed, location of sealing joint, and any specific requirements or call-outs which must be met. A. The starburst core refers to the tang formation created when the metal core is pierced. The result is a column-shaped protrusion which is quite durable. This type of tang is ideally suited to withstand environments which are subject to scrubbing, vibration, or flange movement due to rapid heating cycles or dissimilar metals at the seal point. This core style makes up our HT (Hi-Tex) and AR (Armor) product lines. Starburst core is the preferred choice for hot gas (exhaust) and other heavy duty gasket applications. It provides the radial strength and durability needed for high and extreme applications.
A. Corseal is our smaller rectangular tang formation which provides nearly twice the number of bonding points per square inch as our starburst technology. This configuration allows for a softer crush at bolt up and is ideally suited for narrow wall and tight geometric configurations. Corseal technology is industry proven for gaskets such as cylinder head, intake and other lower load applications.
A. Surbond is our solid core technology, which uses a proprietary adhesive system to bond the facing material to the steel. A solid steel core does not have any holes which could become leak paths, making this style well suited for fluid sealing applications. Surbond is often used in fuel, oil and water pump gaskets, and will service many other applications which are not exposed to higher temperatures.

A. Orders weighing approximately 100 pounds or more generally ship by the carrier of your choice. We also offer the ability to ship using one of our preferred carriers, allowing you to take advantage of our negotiated discounts. The charges are then added to your invoice. Many of our customers find they are able to save a substantial amount of time and money on their freight costs by having MTI negotiate the best rate.
